Saturday 21st September – bike**** Le Havre - Cloudy

Woke up to another blue but hazy sky. After breakfast we drove to Le Havre, had a walk and picked blackberries up near the lighthouse. Carried on a bit further and parked half way down the cliff at the beginning of the cycle track. We packed lunch and cycled along the prom, looking at the many boards showing paintings by impressionist artists such as Monet – they really loved this coast! Out along the harbour wall which was the start of our epic cycle ride around the docks! First of all though we headed into town to find some bread and were lucky enough to catch the end of a triathlon. It was good to watch, unfortunately we had missed the swim but saw the cycling and running. A man had to chase after a lady on a bike on his motorbike because she had done too many laps! The next few hours were taken up with cycling around the many docks trying to find the road which leads out to and under the big motor way bridge across the river Seine, our map shows a road going under it but it was really hard to find and we must have cycled about 20 miles over the course of the day. We did find a view of the bridge eventually but we didn’t get to go under it. Found a good spot for lunch though, sitting on a seat at the side of a canal where at least 20 guys in canoes were playing canoe basketball – crazy! There were also divers and a man sailing a remote controlled yacht. Next to us were some flat made out of containers!! Some of the cycling was a bit scary where the cycle paths crossed over and Mag did get hooted at once! I am amazed we got back unscathed. There were lots of people about when we got back because it was a glorious late afternoon, sunny and not a ripple on the water. We had our cuppa sitting on a seat on the cliff near the van watching a newlywed couple have their wedding photos taken in the sun and the many boats, ranging from container ships, through yachts to jet skis. Went for a bit of a walk later but pretty tired after our bike ride so didn’t venture down to the prom again, couldn’t face the walk back up the hill! We are going to chance staying here tonight so had our left over curry from last night.
